The Maple Leafs were thumped 6-2 by the Ottawa Senators to begin the 2017 preseason schedule. Toronto faced a pair of three-goal deficits in the first period and from then on, the gap was insurmountable.

Curtis McElhinney had a subpar outing in the Leafs’ net, surrendering four goals on 12 shots. On the positive side for the blue and white, Travis Dermott had a strong game in his bid to make the opening day roster.

Auston Matthews and William Nylander scored for the Leafs.

The two teams face each other again on Tuesday night at Air Canada Centre.
