Cardinals' offense starts fast, bullpen closers faster and seizes 7-4 victory vs. Padres in Game 1

SAN DIEGO — Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong saw it in the high-five line at the end of the game Wednesday, about the same time Harrison Bader palmed the baseball he caught at the wall for the final out and flipped it to rookie Alex Reyes as a memento for his first playoff save.

DeJong spied the expression on first baseman Paul Goldschmidt’s usually stoic face and in it saw the reflection of what they had just done to the Padres and must do again Thursday.

“It’s more in the eyes. You’ve got to see his eyes,” DeJong explained.
