How Aramis Garcia’s surprise injury impacts Giants backup catcher competition

With pitchers and catchers set to report to the Giants’ complex in Scottsdale on Tuesday, the team announced one of the players expected to compete for a roster spot won’t be available to play.

Catcher Aramis Garcia underwent arthroscopic hip surgery on Thursday to repair his labrum and will miss the next six-to-eight months. The surgery was performed by Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, Co. after Garcia suffered a hip injury playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic.

Garcia’s injury shakes up the spring training competition for the backup catcher job behind Buster Posey and leaves the Giants with one less major league-caliber player at the position.
