Giants veteran Jeff Samardzija uses milestone to speak up for younger teammates

CHICAGO — The Giants’ celebration honoring pitcher Jeff Samardzija was small, subdued and rather familiar for a team loaded with tenured veteran players.

Samardzija is concerned that won’t be the case much longer.

The veteran pitcher reached 10 years of major league service time over the weekend, an accomplishment he “couldn’t even imagine,” during his first spring training.

It’s an achievement three of Samardzija’s teammates –Evan Longoria, Pablo Sandoval and Johnny Cueto– have already celebrated and one Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner are on pace to enjoy next year.

Last year, the Giants celebrated honored Nick Hundley when he crossed the 10-year threshold.
