Erlin has made a few good starts since joining the rotation in August, but he’s nowhere near securing a rotation place next season. He’s posted a 6.66 ERA in 11 starts this season, compared with a 2.05 mark out of the bullpen.
The right-hander's previous two outings were polar opposites. The Padres scored five runs in three innings against Stratton in his last outing, but he pitched a shutout against the Rockies on Sep. 14.
