Talking with ... Padres pitcher Michel Baez

Right-hander Michel Baez signed for $3 million in December 2016 and found himself pitching at Petco Park some nine months later in the second annual prospect game, now called the Don Welke On Deck Classic. The 23-year-old Baez is wrapping up his rookie season this weekend in Arizona. He is 1-1 with a 3.25 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 13 walks in 27 2/3 innings out of the Padres’ bullpen. Opposing hitters have a .236 average against Baez, one of three Cubans in a young Padres clubhouse. (Editor’s note: David Longley, assistant director of baseball operations, interpreted for this interview).
