Luis Urias starts winter ball assignment in Mexico

An uncooperative hamstring injury kept Luis Urias from picking up offseason at-bats last winter.

The 22-year-old infielder is attempting to make up for lost time this winter.

Urias homered Saturday in his Mexican winter league debut with Obregon and went 1-for-7 Sunday, his first winter ball games since the 2015-16 offseason.

A lot has happened since then.

Urias represented Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, accepted an invitation to the Arizona Fall League and ultimately made his big league debut in 2018 as one of the Padres’ highly-touted prospects.
