Even without best players, Spurs are 'still the Spurs'

James Jones was walking toward the Suns locker room when he heard who the San Antonio Spurs would be without for Saturday’s game against the Suns.

No Kawhi Leonard. No Tony Parker. No Pau Gasol. No Manu Ginobili. No Kyle Anderson.

“They’re still the Spurs,” said Jones, Phoenix’s vice president of basketball operations.

Ain’t that the truth.

San Antonio’s five NBA championships under coach Gregg Popovich are a remarkable feat, but no more so than the Spurs’ consistent excellence over the years. San Antonio has won 50-plus games 18 straight seasons, and its last losing season was 1996-97.
