Shane Doan won't be on the ice for the Coyotes this upcoming season, but the team wants his number to hang from the rafters at some point in the future.
The Coyotes want to retire Doan's jersey "at a time that's right for him," team owner Andrew Barroway said Saturday during a town hall at the Renaissance Glendale Hotel and Spa ahead of their preseason game against the Sharks.
Barroway said Doan thinks it's too early to retire his number this season, but the two sides will discuss the topic at the end of next summer.
Doan announced his retirement last month in The Arizona Republic after he and the Coyotes parted ways earlier in the summer once the team decided not to bring back its former captain.
