NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird: Safety, development key as league weighs more matches in 2020

As the NWSL prepares for the final match of the Challenge Cup on Sunday, the league faces an uncertain future.

Following a board meeting with team owners earlier this week, commissioner Lisa Baird said the NWSL plans to have players return to training in their home markets soon after the Challenge Cup ends. But league officials and owners have yet to determine the next step for league-wide competition.

After the Orlando Pride were forced to withdraw from the Challenge Cup due to coronavirus test results, supporters will continue to await answers.

“If we can get players safely back on the pitch post tournament, we will be doing so,” Baird said.
