Raiders’ Johnathan Abram out for 2019 season with shoulder injury, Gruden says

ALAMEDA — Raiders rookie safety Johnathan Abram has been placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, head coach Jon Gruden confirmed Wednesday.

When asked if he anticipates Abram will be out for the year, Gruden said, “Yes I do.”

Abram could have been eligible to return to play in November if he was placed on IR with the designation to return in eight weeks, but it appears the Raiders are eschewing that option in favor of preserving Abram’s health and possibly saving that designation for another player.

Abram posted a couple tweets Wednesday morning that shed light on his mindset after sustaining a season-ending injury in the first game of his NFL career.
