UNI readies for 'blood-and-guts game' against Cal Poly's option attack

CEDAR FALLS, Ia. — Sporadically splattered throughout college football, the unique offense provide a glimpse into the game's ancient past. Only a few Division I schools still run the flexbone attack, spearheaded by the deadly triple option play that can send opposing head coaches and defensive coordinators into fits of frustration and rage.

Mark Farley has faced this challenge a handful of times. Northern Iowa's head man will encounter it again Saturday when Cal Poly treks to Cedar Falls for the Panthers’ home opener.

Above all, Farley knows one thing: This offense changes everything.

“It takes a whole different dynamic now,” he said this week.
