NCAA wrestling: Panthers open 5-2 to set up high-profile rematches

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Northern Iowa started strong while keeping its eyes on the second round.

Going 5-2 in Thursday’s first round of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, the Panthers set up massive rematches for three young standouts with a shot at Friday’s quarterfinals.

“I think I was too ready for the next one already, when I walked out there,” sophomore Bryce Steiert said after his 6-5 first-round win at 165 pounds. “But I got the job done. Now it’s just a matter of going out there and finding out who the better wrestler is.”

Steiert set up his fourth meeting of the season with Missouri’s Daniel Lewis by hanging on against Army’s Andrew Mendel.
