Yankees thump Twins again to close in on wild-card spot

Brett Gardner belts an RBI single in the fourth inning of the Yankees' 5-2 win on Tuesday night.

When the Yankees batted in the sixth inning Tuesday night against a parade of mediocre Twins pitchers, they couldn’t have missed the news from Baltimore that the Red Sox had beaten the Orioles in extra innings for the second straight evening.

If it wasn’t spreading in the home dugout, the result was in lights on the scoreboard high above the Yankees’ bullpen in center field.

With their slim chances of winning the AL East dwindling, the Yankees couldn’t afford to let go of a lead and they didn’t, hanging a 5-2 loss on the Twins in front of 30,218 at Yankee Stadium.
