Scout wouldn’t let Yankees derail Derek Jeter’s Hall of Fame path

It didn’t take Dick Groch long to see Derek Jeter wasn’t an average high school prospect when he first saw him at an All-Star camp in Michigan before Jeter’s junior year.

“When you’re looking at young players, some are Chevys and sometimes you see a Lexus,’’ said Groch, the former Yankees scout who helped the Yankees draft and sign the shortstop with the No. 6 pick in 1992. “He was a major league player. You could see he could be a dominating player.”

And it’s why, in the days leading up to that draft — when there was still some question whether Jeter would attend the University of Michigan instead of signing to play professionally — that Groch made his most famous statement in his decades as a scout with the Yankees, Brewers and Expos.
