Power-play futility holds down Islanders again

LOS ANGELES — The Islanders special teams have been poor so far this season. On Sunday night, special teams did them in.

The Kings scored once on the power play and once shorthanded as the Isles’ power-play futility stretched to a seasonlong 0-for-20 in a 3-2 loss that capped a 1-2-0 California trip.

The Isles once again swung between stretches of strong forechecking and good control of the puck in the offensive zone to not being able to exit their own end cleanly and getting pinned there for full shifts by a fresher Los Angeles squad.

The Isles killed off a Kings power play at the start of the third and got their own advantage at 3:46 to try and pull even.
