This year’s opener vs. the Dolphins can actually be a statement game for the Patriots

Welcome to Season 9, Episode 1 of the Unconventional Preview, a serious-yet-lighthearted, nostalgia-tinted look at the Patriots’ weekly matchup.

The Miami Dolphins should look rather familiar to the Patriots come 1 p.m. Sunday, and not just because they show up on each other’s schedules twice per season.

The Dolphins were the last team the Patriots collided with during the 2019 regular season, and much to their surprise, the Patriots got the worst of the collision. The Dolphins, guided inspiringly by first-year coach Brian Flores, beat the Patriots, 27-24, at Gillette Stadium, wrecking New England’s bid for a bye and revealing flaws that would be fatally exposed by the Titans in a first-round loss.
