Imagine the Dodgers are in a tie game, 7th inning and they are playing the Giants. Dave Roberts has a lefty in the bullpen, getting ready for the top of the 8th when Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford are due up. The Dodgers get the lead runner on second base with two outs. However, the baserunner is AJ Ellis, who is not known for his speed. Roberts signals for a pinch runner. But instead of seeing a runner emerge from the dugout, the bullpen gates open and in comes lefty speedster Jordan Schafer to run. The move pays off as Joc Pederson smokes a single to right and Schafer scores ahead of the throw on a play that surely would have kept AJ Ellis at 3rd base and the Dodgers take the lead.
