Carter went undrafted out of James Madison after the 2020 NFL Draft but was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent. He was highly coveted by the Cowboys after the draft and ended up receiving one of the largest signing amounts for a undrafted free agent after the 2020 NFL Draft.
