UF coach Jim McElwain: Gators may use three QBs in Michigan opener

UF coach Jim McElwain declined to name a starter for next week’s season opener against Michigan, suggesting as many as three quarterbacks could play against the Wolverines.

Talented redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks; incumbent Luke Del Rio, who battled injuries last season; and Notre Dame transfer Malik Zaire all continue to battle for the job.

“Don’t read into this that we’re not happy where they’re at, it’s really more so that the competition has brought out some good things,” McElwain said.

The 6-foot-6, 219-pound Franks has made a compelling case with his arm strength and size, the 6-foot, 225-pound Zaire with his mobility and leadership and the 6-foot-1, 211-pound Del Rio with his grasp of McElwain’s offense and decision-making.
