Red Wings' prospect Evgeny Svechnikov looks to send message in preseason

DETROIT - As Evgeny Svechnikov prepares for the next step that will lead to the NHL in a year or two, he must strike a balance between playing fast and slowing down the game.

The Detroit Red Wings' top pick in 2015 had a decent pro debut with the Grand Rapids Griffins last season, finishing fourth with 20 goals and third with 51 points.

Barring a rash of injuries in Detroit, Svechnikov will return to the AHL this season, after playing a few preseason games, including tonight at Pittsburgh (7 p.m., no local TV or radio).

"Ultimately, to be a really good player at this level he has to make sure he plays with pace, he has to make sure he keeps his stick on the ice so he stays away from hooking penalties," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said.
