How Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford can pass for 5,000 yards this season

Five thousand yards.

It’s a magical number for NFL quarterbacks. Only seven players, including Detroit Lionsquarterback Matthew Stafford, have reached the seasonal passing milestone.

Dan Marino, in 1984, was the first. Drew Brees followed in 2008 (and did it four more times). Then came Stafford and Tom Brady in 2011. Peyton Manning did it in 2013. Patrick Mahomes and Ben Roethlisberger did it last season.

Stafford is flirting with 5,000 yards again. He has 2,499 yards, and needs to average 313 yards a game the rest of the season.

There are any number of factors that can keep that from happening, especially injuries.
