Broncos OC Scangarello putting new twist on familiar-from-years-past offense

For eight hours in mid-January, Broncos general manager John Elway and new coach Vic Fangio interviewed and exchanged ideas with San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello.

That the time flew by indicated to Elway they had homed in on the right play-caller to resuscitate the Broncos’ dormant offense.

“It felt like it lasted an hour because I love talking about offensive football and hearing what Rich had in mind and what he liked to do,” Elway said in a training camp interview with The Denver Post.

The meeting led to Elway hiring Scangarello as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator, tasked with developing a system that is equal parts old school (run game), modern (challenging defenses downfield) and innovative (taking full advantage of versatile players).
