Crew SC might send a player to the Olympics this summer, though it’s not the one who most thought would make the trip to Rio de Janeiro.
U.S. Under-23 captain Wil Trapp and the Americans couldn't grab a spot in the Games last week, dropping a two-leg, aggregate-goal play-in series against Colombia, 3-2.
But the Crew was informed that midfielder Justin Meram is a candidate to join Iraq’s Olympic team as an over-age player. Each of the 16 teams in the tournament may have up to three players older than 23.
“It’s not like I’m some 10-year vet, so it’s quite an honor for me,” Meram said.
