Soccer | Crew falls to Timbers in opener

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Forward Fanendo Adi scored a late winner to push the Portland Timbers past Crew SC 2-1 today in the marquee matchup of Major League Soccer’s opening day in sold-out Providence Park.

Argentine playmaker Federico Higuain scored a jaw-dropping, bicycle-kick goal in the second half tie the score at 1 in the 68th minute, but a ball parried away by Crew keeper Steve Clark fell to Adi for an easy finish at the back post in the 79th.

Midfielder Diego Valeri also scored for the Timbers, who raised their MLS Cup championship banner before the game, a rematch of the final three months earlier that Portland won 2-1 at Mapfre Stadium.
