Michael Arace column | Steve Clark locks up victory for Crew

Crew SC coach Gregg Berhalter — and, by and large, his players — were not alarmed after Game 1 or Game 2. They were not alarmed after games 3, 4 or 5. What, me worry?

They had the edge on possession. They were connecting on a high percentage of their passes. They had quality chances.

Their metrics, save for “crossing efficiency,” were awesome.

The only problems the Crew had were with the scoreboard and the standings. The tricky stuff. They had but three goals, only one in the run of play, through five matches. They had zero wins, two losses and three ties, and they’d been shut out twice, heading into Saturday night’s game at Mapfre Stadium.
