Rockies’ Sam Hilliard brings promise of speed and power. Can he deliver?

Sam Hilliard sure looks the part of a major-league slugger. He’s 6-feet-5, 240 pounds and carries thunder in his sweet, left-handed swing.

If he could blossom in the big leagues, possibly as early as next season, he would solve some of the Rockies’ power problems, plus save the organization some big bucks.

As far as initial impressions go, the Rockies’ 25-year-old outfielder has hit a grand slam. Thursday night, he powered a two-run, opposite-field home run to left off Pittsburgh’s Michael Feliz, becoming just the fourth player in Rockies history to hit home runs in each of his first two career starts, joining Jason Bates (1995), Todd Helton (1997) and Trevor Story (2016).
