As the Padres got mad, Ian Desmond got down to business.
A day after the Rockies’ outfielder had an electric inside-the-park homer, Desmond did damage with the lumber again via a fifth-inning grand slam that was the catalyst in Colorado’s 14-8 win over the Padres at Coors Field.
Three Padres — third baseman Manny Machado, pitcher Matt Strahm and manager Andy Green — were ejected on a night where San Diego tempers flared with home plate umpire Bill Welke. But as the visitors got red-faced over Welke’s strike zone, Colorado kept its collective foot on the gas en route to setting a season high for runs.
