Minus Cale Makar, the Avalanche loses 5-4 in OT to the Calgary Flames

Life without Cale Makar was a turbulent experience for the Avalanche on Monday night.

Playing without its prized rookie defenseman for the first time this season, and the first time in 40 games dating to last year’s playoffs, Colorado gave up too many goals and didn’t score enough in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames at the Pepsi Center.

The Avs saw their six-game winning streak snapped when Sean Monahan scored 2:09 into OT, beating goalie Pavel Francouz from a wrist shot between the circles to extend Calgary’s winning streak to five games. Superstar Nathan MacKinnon scored one goal and assisted on another as Colorado rallied from a 4-2 third-period deficit to force overtime and collect a point.
