PITTSBURGH — The Avalanche scored three goals Monday, two counted and that was enough to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 at PPG Paints Arena.

Mark Barberio scored early in the third period and Blake Comeau added an empty-netter in the final minutes as Colorado took a 2-0 lead and went on to upset the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions. The Avs improved to 2-1 on their four-game road trip.

Phil Kessel ruined goalie Jonathan Bernier‘s shutout by scoring for the Penguins with 11.8 second remaining on a 6-on-5 attack.
