The Cleveland Indians have issued a statement with their intent to “determine the best path forward” regarding the name of the club.
The statement comes less than 24 hours after the Washington Redskins issued a similar statement following pressure from their sponsors and removal of Redkins merchandise from Nike.com. Pressure came from sponsors including FedEx, who hold the naming rights to the Redskins’ home stadium.
It’s unknown if the Indians faced that kind of pressure yet, but you can bet it would come eventually and they’re clearly trying to get out ahead of it.
