RedsXtra: How a crowded outfield with Shogo Akiyama makes some sense for Cincinnati Reds

As much as the Cincinnati Reds are looking for an impact bat to improve the lineup, they’ve emphasized depth throughout their roster.

Signing Japanese outfielder Shogo Akiyama strengthens the Reds’ 26-man roster despite giving them a crowded outfield mix. They could have five players competing for three starting spots: Akiyama, Nick Senzel, Jesse Winker, Aristides Aquino and Phillip Ervin.

Teams that were in the running for Akiyama were told that he had an agreement with the Reds, sources told The Enquirer. Akiyama is expected to sign a three-year contract worth a little more than $20 million, according to a source.
