Even those who were optimistic about the Michigan State football team this year have to be a little surprised at the Spartans’ 5-1 start.

What’s more unexpected than the record, though, is the way they’ve gotten here. The stable of veteran running backs hasn’t carried the team, but instead Brian Lewerke has emerged as a reliable dual-threat to lead the offense. The defense, meanwhile, has wasted little time in climbing the national rankings.
