Yankees stay active, trade Chase Headley to open payroll

The Red Sox are still quiet. The Yankees are still at it.

One day after introducing Giancarlo Stanton as their newest slugger, the Yankees reportedly have opened some more payroll by trading Chase Headley and Bryan Mitchell to the Padres for outfielder Jabari Blash. Joel Sherman and Ken Rosenthal were the first to report the deal, which looks like a salary dump to give the Yankees more spending power.

Headley is owed $13 million in the final year of his contract. Mitchell is cheap pitching depth who could fit as a fifth starter or long reliever.
