One shoulder surgery led to another shoulder surgery, and now Marco Hernandez is out of the mix for the Red Sox bench.

Hernandez flew back to Boston to have hardware taken out of his left shoulder. The hardware was added last season in an effort to stabilize the shoulder after subluxation, which had been a recurring problem.

The hope was that Hernandez would compete for a bench role this spring. Before Eduardo Nunez was signed, Hernandez was even mentioned as a favorite to play second base.

“Can’t give you a time when he’s coming back,” manager Alex Cora said.
