Braves sign Pablo Sandoval to minor league deal, per report

File this one under things you did not expect: the Braves have signed Pablo Sandoval to a minor league contract and have assigned him to their alternate site in Gwinnett, according to Jon Heyman.

Sandoval began the shortened season with the Giants but was released last week after hitting a paltry .220/.278/.268 across 90 plate appearances. Sandoval has not been good in recent years, although he did hit to the tune of a 110 wRC+ and 1.0 WAR in 93 games last summer. This would seem to be nothing more than extreme depth and Break In Case Of Emergency insurance for the Braves during the final two weeks of the regular season.
