FAYETTEVILLE — Nate Allen was tougher than most of the athletes he covered.
Allen, a sports reporter who chronicled the Razorbacks for Arkansas newspapers big and small during the course of his 52-year career, died Wednesday. He was 75.
Allen died at his home in Fayetteville. He had been hospitalized multiple times since the summer with pneumonia and was under hospice care.
Allen most recently was a freelance columnist for the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. His last commentary appeared in the Tuesday edition of the newspaper and touched on, among other things, the Arkansas football transition to new coach Ryan Silverfield — the 16th full-time or interim coach of the Razorbacks since Allen arrived in Northwest Arkansas to cover Frank Broyles’ team in 1973.
