Last week in New York, Robbie Ray could not escape the first inning. The blister on his finger split, his secondary stuff was unusable and the New York Mets blasted him. Ray pitched that night because he did not want to let the team down, but, in his mind, he managed to do so anyway.
“It’s just kind of unacceptable,” he said.
On Monday night, Ray’s blister was no longer a topic of conversation. In six-plus dominant innings, he flirted with a no-hitter and shut down the Miami Marlins, putting a slightly revamped delivery on display in a game the Diamondbacks rallied to win 7-5 at Chase Field.
