Homegrown success stories open Games

The 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games got off to an inspiring start Sunday night in Steinbach as homegrown role models who have succeeded in the world of sports carried the torch to light the cauldron for the event’s opening ceremonies.

About 700 athletes from the first phase of this week’s games gathered outside of Steinbach Regional Secondary School to see Blumenort’s Steffan Reimer, an accomplished marathoner, Steinbach’s Bryan Gueret, a decorated Special Olympian, Steinbach’s Mitchell Martens, a former Games gold medalist, Oakbank’s Samantha Renooy, a world ringette gold-medal winner and Steinbach’s Michelle Sawatzky-Koop, a former volleyball Olympian, bring in the torch to officially begin this summer’s Games.
