Staying alive: West Virginia stuns top-seeded Texas Tech late

Seemingly on its way out of the Big 12 tournament, West Virginia stayed alive with a stunning finish, using a crucial defensive mistake by Texas Tech to prevail 12-7 in a 10-inning elimination game that lasted 4 1/2 hours.

“That one is tough to put into words,” said coach Randy Mazey, whose team trailed 6-3 in the eighth before rallying against the top-seeded and No. 3-ranked Red Raiders (43-15).

The Mountaineers (34-23) still must beat Oklahoma State twice on Saturday to reach the Big 12 championship game, but they’ve already solidified their case for making an NCAA regional next weekend.
