Another unconventional win as WVU takes down Tech

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Overcoming a premature exit by its starting pitcher for a second consecutive day, West Virginia surprised regular-season champion Texas Tech 9-4 to stay unbeaten at the Big 12 conference tournament on Thursday night.

“I swear we’re not doing that on purpose,” coach Randy Mazey said. “We came down here thinking we have the two best starting pitchers in the Big 12, and they’ve thrown a combined two innings between them and we are 2-0.”

The Mountaineers (35-21) lost All-Big 12 right-hander Chad Donato to arm tightness after four outs, yet found the resolve to take down Texas Tech (41-15).
