While their EFL Cup victory against bitter rivals Chelsea in midweek should have been hailed as a third successive win, instead attention was cast on the hundreds of fans from both sides who clashed at the end.
The suitability of West Ham’s London Stadium to host such a volatile match given its recent problems was called into question ahead of the game and in stoppage time riot police were required to keep the two sets of supporters apart as bottles, coins and even chairs, ripped from their joints, were thrown.
