Premier League clubs ranked by their greatest ever European achievement – from worst to first

The Intertoto Cup was a terrible summer tournament that fell under UEFA's control in the 1990s. Palace entered it once, in the third round, and lost home and away to Turkish club Samsunspor. The Eagles have never played in any other European competition.

16. Southampton – reached the Fairs Cup third round in 1969/70

The Saints qualified for this forerunner of the UEFA Cup/Europa League courtesy of their league placing, and progressed past Rosenborg and Vitoria de Guimaraes, including a 5-1 win at the Dell (pictured above), but lost on away goals to holders Newcastle United in the third round.
