The Washington Redskins and Green Bay Packers were expected by most to go down two very different paths this season. However, the NFC East champion Redskins have beaten the odds all season long and are currently engaged in a entertaining back-and-forth showdown with the Packers in Sunday's NFC Wild Card showdown.
However, a veteran Green Bay squad overcame a double-digit deficit in the first half, scoring 17 straight and heading into the locker room with a 17-11 lead in Sunday's NFC Wild Card Game in D.C.
Sunday's game started with a bang for Washington's defense, as the Redskins opened up the scoring with a Preston Smith sack of Aaron Rodgers for a safety under five minutes in. It was the first playoff sack for a Washington squad since a 1984 Divisional Round matchup against the Chicago Bears.
Washington eventually stretched the lead to 11-0 thanks to a Dustin Hopkins chip shot field goal and a nifty 24-yard connection between QB Kirk Cousins and TE Jordan Reed for a touchdown. Reed blew past the Green Bay secondary, catching the ball untouched over the top of the defense.
Green Bay answered right back, however, as Aaron Rodgers captained a clutch nine-play, 80-yard response ending in a 12-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb. The Packers would compound the momentum on the team's next defensive series when Mike Neal recovered a Kirk Cousins fumble at midfield.
The Packers eventually cashed in for three on a Mason Crosby field goal, cutting Washington's lead to one at 11-10 with 2:54 remaining. Washington would be forced to punt on their next possession, giving Green Bay another shot to score with just over two minutes left.
Green Bay would make good as WR Davante Adams put a frustrating, injury- and drop-laden season behind him with a go-ahead 10-yard TD reception from Aaron Rodgers. That sends the Packers into the locker room happy and the Redskins into the break with plenty to discuss.
