In Redskins news today, it looks as though the Jay Gruden era in the District of Columbia may begin with a giant splash in free agency.
According to multiple sources around the league, the Washington Redskins are rekindling their interest in New England Patriots' free agent cornerback Aqib Talib. The Redskins had originally pursued Talib last season, but did not have the space or the money to sign him. Now armed with roughly $14 million in cap space, the Washington Redskins look set to make a run at the 2nd team All-NFL corner.
The Redskins are in need of improvements to a pass defense that finished just 20th in the NFL with 243.5 yards allowed per game. Pairing Aqib Talib alongside David Amerson, along with potentially resigning DeAngelo Hall, could give the Redskins' secondary the boost it needs.
Aqib Talib emerged this year as a star in the New England Patriots' secondary, intercepting 4 passes in 13 games and becoming a true lock-down #1 cornerback. His season was cut short in the AFC Championship game by a controversial pick by Denver Broncos' wide receiver Wes Welker. The knee injury he sustained in that collision showed no structural damage upon evaluation.
