Scherzer day to day with thumb soreness

MIAMI -- Max Scherzer played catch on Sunday at Marlins Park, and the Nationals right-hander said his right thumb is still sore. He is not sure if he will make his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Braves.

Though he is not ruling out making the start, Scherzer wants to be sure he is at 100 percent. Scherzer recalled that while at the University of Missouri, he had a cut in his right middle finger and pitched through the pain. Two weeks later, he had biceps tendinitis.

"I almost really messed up my shoulder," Scherzer said.
