Nationals Reinstate LHP Tom Gorzelanny from DL, Place OF Rick Ankiel on DL

The Washington Nationals today recalled from rehab and reinstated left-handed pitcher Tom Gorzelanny from the 15-Day Disabled List and placed outfielder Rick Ankiel (left intercostal strain) on the 15-Day Disabled List, retroactive to June 15. Nationals Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Gorzelanny missed the last 24 games after being placed on the DL on May 27, retroactive to May 24, with left elbow inflammation. The 28-year-old is 2-4 with a 4.25 ERA in nine starts with Washington, and his 8.15 strikeouts per 9.0 innings and .230 batting average against are tops among Nationals starting pitchers in 2011.

In one rehab start with Syracuse of the Triple-A International League on June 13, Gorzelanny allowed four earned runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched and took the loss.

Ankiel, 31, is batting .204 with 15 runs scored, eight doubles, one home run, nine RBI, 14 walks and seven stolen bases in 48 games this season with the Nationals.
