Craig Kimbrel to replace Matt Cain on National League All-Star roster

National League All-Star manager Bruce Bochy has named Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Craig Kimbrel to the roster to replace San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain.

Cain was San Francisco's starting pitcher in tonight's game with the New York Mets. In accordance with the rule that makes Sunday's starting pitchers ineligible to pitch in Tuesday's Midsummer Classic, Cain had to be replaced. Because Cain was originally selected to the team by Bochy, his replacement was to be selected by the manager in conjunction with Major League Baseball. Cain will be inactive on Tuesday but will attend the festivities in Phoenix.

Kimbrel's 28 saves represent a Major League rookie record by the All-Star break. On the season, he is 2-2 with a 2.35 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 46.0 innings pitched. He has allowed just 30 hits and 18 walks in his 46.0 innings pitched. It marks the second straight year that a Braves rookie has made the N.L. All-Star roster, as Jason Heyward was elected by fans last season. Kimbrel joins Braves teammates Chipper Jones, Jair Jurrjens, Brian McCann and fellow reliever Jonny Venters as N.L. All-Stars this season.

Other announcements regarding the All-Star rosters will be made as they become available.
