UW sophomore wins Pacific Northwest Amateur

Washington sophomore Carl Yuan posted seven birdies and one eagle en route to claiming the 115th Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championship on Saturday at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla.

Yuan defeated Andrew Whalen of Ephrata 5 and 3 after 33 holes.

The pair played the first 18 holes fairly even. Yuan went ahead on No. 19 with a par. He birdied No. 20 to go 2 up and never looked back.

“This is definitely a big win for me,” Yuan said. “It’s my first win here and my first match-play win, and I’m very excited about it.
