Huskies sweep Gonzaga in volleyball opener

SPOKANE — The 10th-ranked Washington volleyball team beat Gonzaga in its season opener Friday night, 25-19, 25-23, 25-15, as new coach Keegan Cook picked up the first win of his head-coaching career.

Sophomore Courtney Schwan led UW with 12 kills and nine digs while Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones added eight kills apiece.

Cassie Strickland had nine digs for the Huskies, and Lianna Sybeldon chipped in with seven kills and six blocks.

Men’s soccer

Washington opened the season at home with a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga. Beau Blanchard scored the only goal.
